How do I become a member of the Engineering Institution of Zambia (EIZ)? Currently, EIZ is only accepting membership applications from diploma and degree holders in any engineering field. It must be noted here that a new Act will include those that do not meet these requirements but are involved in some form of engineering. What is EIZ anyway? EIZ stands for ‘Engineering Institution of Zambia’. EIZ was established in 1955 by an Act of Parliament. The EIZ Act No. 27, Cap 432 of the Laws of Zambia- was passed in 1992 by Parliament. In 1993, through Statutory Instrument 125, the Act came into force. EIZ is a professional body that is charged with the responsibility of looking after the interests of all engineers and the engineering profession in Zambia. And through the creation and establishment of the Engineers Registration Board (EngRB), EIZ is charged with regulation of all practicing engineers in Zambia. Is it really necessary to be a member of EIZ? In Zambia and in a number of countries, there is legislation to regulate the practice of all highly specialised professions, such as Accountancy, Medicine and Law. Professionals in these fields are allowed to offer their services to the public only if qualified and members of statutory bodies for their professions. The EIZ shoulders the responsibility for engineers. This has a two-fold advantage: ensuring public safety and maintaining high standards in the engineering profession.
