The Engineering Institution of Zambia (EIZ) was formed in 1955. The Institution is currently functioning under the EIZ Act of 1992. The Act provided for the creation of the Engineering Registration Board (EngRB). EIZ has in the recent past finalised the process of repealing and replacing the 1992 EIZ Act.
EIZ is a professional body for engineers and allied disciplines. By virtue of its membership and power vested in it by the Act, EIZ is the authority on all engineering matters in Zambia. It regulates the practice of engineering in all fields, including agriculture, construction, consultancy, information and communication technology, manufacturing, mining and metallurgy, power and energy, transport, water and sanitation.
Previously, the Institution had attempted to come up with a Strategic Plan, and in 1999 went as far as developing a mission statement and corresponding strategies. At that time, the EIZ planning process was guided by the economic fundamentals of that era which focussed on producing more food for the people of Zambia.
The Institution has now has now finalised its mid-term strategic plan for the years 2009 to 2013. The five year strategic plan is meant to bring to the fore the activities of the Institution and enhance engineering professional development, regulation and practice. The Institution is now faced with the challenge of enhancing its contribution to national development through the regulation of the practice of engineering in Zambia. In the light of this, the Institution needs to position itself as the leading authority on engineering in the country.

The Zambian economy has seen an upswing trend in growth. The government has come up with Vision 2030 to ensure Zambia attains middle income status by 2030.
