Cap 432 of the Laws of Zambia lays out the procedures for constituting the Engineer’s Registration Board. Apart from empowering the Board to oversee the practice of Engineering in Zambia, the Act regulates the operations of the Board. The membership of the Board represents various constituencies called electoral colleges. The Dean of Engineering at the University of Zambia is an ex-officio member. Members are elected to the Board for three years at an EIZ Annual General Meeting. The Board secretariat is headed by a Registrar. The colleges are as follows: - NC1 Consulting Engineers
- NC2 Aeronautical, Aircraft, Automobile, Mechanical, Production
- NC3 Civil, Environmental, Land Surveying, Roads, Structural, Water and Sanitation and Agriculture
- NC4 Electrical: Power, Control, Electronics, Telecommunications, Computers
- NC5 Geology, Mining
- NC6 Metallurgy, Chemical Process, Petroleum and Lubrication Engineering
- NC7 Other
The Board keeps, in accordance with the provisions of the Act and regulations, a list of all the engineers categorized on an individual or company basis on a Register. The Board issues practicing certificates and licenses in the prescribed format to persons/firms who have been registered as engineers/engineering firms authorizing such persons/firms named therein to practise as engineers/engineering firms. Practising licences specify the category of registration and fields of engineering in which the holder may practise. The licences are valid from 1st January (or when issued) to 31st December of the same year. The practicing certificates are not valid without a current practicing licence. The Board sits about four times a year to consider new cases and renewals. Renewals are normally considered in December preceding the year of issuance of certificate. A list of all persons/firms who have been issued with practicing certificates is published in public newspapers and the Government Gazette. Unless the contrary is proved, this is enough evidence that the persons/firms named therein are registered as engineers/engineering firms and holding such certificates for the current year.
