EIZ President, Eng Henry Musonda - Inaugural Speech
From now onwards, I have the privilege of leading the Institution in the classic sense of leading EIZ members, individually and organizationally, for the next 12 months. As interesting as that would be, I WOULD LIKE TO DISCUSS THE ISSUE OF LEADERSHIP. Not leadership in the context I just made reference to, but leadership by the profession in a public role in the theme areas of professional practice, infrastructure, Industry and environment. Engineering Institution of Zambia (EIZ) President Henry Musonda has thanked the 54th Council and the secretariat for the input they put for the betterment of the Institution.
By BRUCE KAUNDA The first step in reducing poverty and hunger in developing countries is to invest in agriculture and rural development, International Food Policy Research Institute (IFPRI) director general has observed. Shenggen Fan said during the conference call briefing to the journalists world wide, that Scaled-up investments in social protection that focus on nutrition and health are also crucial.
“More importantly, policymakers should increase investments in productive safety net programs that support the poorest and hungriest households and increase their productive capacity,” Mr Fen said. He told the conference that new actors in global development—the private sector, philanthropic organizations, and, more importantly, emerging economies—have important roles to play in reducing hunger in developing countries. He said the private sector can provide effective and sustainable investment and innovation to help in the fight against hunger. “Private companies should be given the right incentives and a favourable operating environment. Emerging economies are playing a growing role in trade and investment, and in providing development assistance. They need to be fully integrated into the global food security agenda,” Mr Feng said. Mr Feng also said in a statement that the G8 and the G20 should not over overlook the hunger crisis. He said The food crisis is not over. In the past year alone, the number of hungry people in the world has risen by about 105 million. As G8 and G20 leaders prepare to gather in Canada next week, IFPRI is issuing a report that examines the connections between hunger and economic recovery and outlines steps that world leaders can take to keep the international community’s commitment to reduce global hunger by half in the next five year
